Books are the fruit of a long, collaborative process that inevitably
has a stopping point. As a result, there's never enough time to get everything into a book that you want. So,
here are a few extra secrets and other additions, in
printer-friendly form, that didn't make it in the first edition.
In addition, books are done by human beings. In other
words, mistakes happen. In recognition of that fact, here's a list
of corrections from the first printing of "Personal Computer Secrets."

Correction
|
| Front Cover |
936 pages isn't quite 1,000 but it's close (the cover had to be finished
before we knew the final page count). |
| Pg. 19 |
In the first sentence at the top of the
page, the list of items after the colon (:) should not
include a monitor. |
| Pg. 21 |
The text at the bottom of the page is
improperly formatted. |
| Pg. 58 |
The Processor Family Tree diagram is
missing dashes in the K6-2 and K6-3 processor names (they're also
out of order). In addition, it should be the AMD (not AMX) K7--which
is now being called the Athlon. |
| Pg. 74 |
Not necessarily a correction, but a
clarification in the sidebar on RAM speeds is missing. After the
last sentence at the bottom of the page it should read. "Note,
however, that because SDRAM operates differently than EDO and FPM
RAM, it's not fair to directly compare their timing measurements.
SDRAM measurements do not include the initial delay time that the
EDO and FPM ratings do." |
| Pg. 288 |
In the second paragraph down, the first
sentence is missing a colon (:) after the word "on" (the
third line of that paragraph). |
| Pg. 367 |
Again, not a correction, but a
clarification. After the very last sentence on the page it should
read, "Theoretically, newer parallel ports can support multiple
devices per port, but practically speaking, they usually
don't." |
| Pg. 407 |
The last line on the page is missing the
word "or" right after the parentheses. |
| Pg. 488 |
At the end of the second paragraph, the
following clarification was left out. "If you have an internal
DSL or cable modem, then you'll typically only need one network
card." |
| Pg. 489 |
In the last sentence of the second
paragraph the word "assisting" should be
"assigning". |
| Pg. 574-575 |
The web site URL should be
http://www.everythingcomputers.com/book.htm (singular). |
| Pg. 614-615 |
An additional point about the automated
backup procedure described here is that the backup application will
launch at the scheduled time, but it doesn't automatically start the
backup at that time. You still have to do that manually. |
| Pg. 658 |
The Windows Media Player is not included
on the book's CD-ROM. |
| Pg. 713 |
A sentence was accidentally cut out of the
last paragraph. After the first sentence it should read, "You
may have to choose between the new profile and your former profile
on your next startup." |
| Pg. 752 |
Again, a clarification that was supposed
to be included in a new paragraph right before the Summary reads,
"Once you've created the partitions and re-installed the
operating system, you need to individually reinstall each
application. Once that's done, you can re-install any application
updates you've backed up. Finally, you can complete the process by
copying back over your data files." |
| Pg. 807 |
In the last paragraph of the page, the
sentence inside the parentheses should refer to a file called
Start.htm (instead of Start Here.htm). |
| Pg. 808 |
In the paragraph that starts,
"Clicking on The Book..." the version of Acrobat on the CD
is listed incorrectly. It should be 3.0. Also, there are several PDF
files (one for each chapter, plus the front and back sections), not
a single file. |
| Pg. 810 |
Again, the version of Acrobat on the CD is
3.0, not 4.0 (because 4.0 didn't have the Search feature complete
when the CD-ROM was mastered). |
| Pg. 832 |
In the definition of DFP, the acronym DVI
actually stands for Digital Visual Interface. |
| Pg. 837 |
Similarly, in the definition of DVI, the
acronym should be written out Digital Visual Interface, not Digital
Video Interface. Also, the acronym LCD
is transposed. |
| Pg.. 848 |
In the definition, of HiFD, it should say
3 1/2" floppy. |
| Pg. 859 |
In the definition of LPC, the
parenthetical note should say "without support for ISA". |
| Pg. 860 |
In the definition of LS-120, it should say
3 1/2" floppy. |
| Pg. 890 |
In the definition of Streaming SIMD, the
second sentence should read. "Streaming SIMD (Single
Instruction Multiple Data) Extensions, which are often referred to
as SSE, are designed to enable applications such as software
decoding of MPEG-2 video, 3D graphics and more." |
| Pg. 905-926 |
An upgraded version of the index with both
more entries and more complete entries is available in PDF form by
clicking here. |
| Pg. 936 (the last page) |
In the first paragraph, the file on the CD
to double-click is actually called Start.htm. |
