December 4, 1999
I've made a few more additions and tweaks to the "Computer Shopping
Tips" article.
October 29, 1999
I've beefed up the new "Computer Shopping
Tips" article, adding more details and cleaning up a few typos.
I've also made some additions and corrections to my Listener's
Page and Users Group Page.
October 23, 1999
I've added a new article entitled "Computer
Shopping Tips for the Holidays," as well as a printer-friendly
version of it.
September 17, 1999
I've added some new links to the "Personal
Computer Secrets" Reviews page, which offers reviews of my book
from various places on the web.
August 7, 1999
I've made several nips and tucks to the site, some of which reflect my
recent employment change. As of the beginning of this month I'm no longer
writing the "Plugged In" column for InfoWorld Electric, so the "This
Week's Column" page has been changed to reflect that. You can
still access a complete archive of my columns from the "Previous
Columns" page. Also, as a result of my new full-time position as
an analyst with International Data Corp.
(IDC), I've had to discontinue the "This
Week's News" page. I simply don't have time to write it every
week. I will, however, continue updating the "This
Week's Links" page and you can still find an archive of the news
page on the "Previous Weeks Links and
News" page. In conjunction with these changes, I've also
streamlined the home page and other pages
throughout the site.
August 4, 1999
I've added a link to the "Personal
Computer Secrets" review page for my recent appearance on ZDTV's
"Call for Help" to discuss the book. I've also added a few minor
corrections to the "Personal
Computer Secrets" Additions and Corrections page.
July 31, 1999
I've added another book review to my "Personal
Computer Secrets" review page. This one happens to be from a
chain of papers that includes my hometown paper from the Chicago suburbs.
July 26, 1999
I added pictures taken at the live broadcast/book signing at the San
Mateo Barnes&Noble bookstore to the Live
Appearance page.
July 10, 1999
I added a Reviews page to the "Personal
Computer Secrets" section of the site that includes excerpts from
and links to reviews of the book.
July 3, 1999
I made some minor corrections and clarifications to the "Starting
Over: Repartitioning, Reformatting and Reinstalling" article in
the Troubleshooting Guide. I've also added information about the upcoming live
broadcast/book signing event at the Barnes&Noble in San Mateo, CA.
June 20, 1999
I've made some more additions to the "Personal Computer
Secrets" section of the site, including an Additions
and Corrections page and a PDF
version of the Sample Chapter.
May 22, 1999
I've made several additions to the "Personal
Computer Secrets" section of the site, including a Sample
Chapter Page, PDF versions of the Contents at a Glance
and complete Table of Contents, and a list of facts and figures
about the book that I call PCS By the Numbers.
May 15, 1999
I've made a few corrections and revisions to the
pages dedicated to "Personal Computer Secrets," including
the PCS CD-ROM page that I originally posted last week.
April 24, 1999
I've added a secure order form for my upcoming
"Personal Computer Secrets" book so that you can now
order it here directly on the web. I'm selling personally signed copies for the same price
that you'll probably pay at an online or brick-and-mortar book store, so check it out.
April 10, 1999
I've added a great deal more information about my
upcoming book, "Personal Computer Secrets," which is due
to be on sale around the end of May. You can view a Contents
at Glance, which lists the names of the five parts and 18 chapters that the book
includes, or a complete Table of Contents, which includes
all the headings from all the book's different chapters.
I've also updated the site to reflect the new
time for the "O'Donnell on Computers" radio show and
added a page about the upcoming KSFO Common Sense Convention
listener party event.
Finally, I've also made some minor updates to all
the articles in the Troubleshooting Guide and replaced the Java Chat applet with a newer, more robust version.
February 27, 1999
I've removed some broken links in the Troubleshooting Resources page and adjusted the EverythingComputers
Discussion Board so that it's at least viewable in both Internet Explorer and Netscape
Navigator. Unfortunately, because of the way the Web Crossings software that drives it
works, the discussion questions appear at the bottom of the page. I'm hoping to get a fix
for that soon.
February 12, 1999
The Talkback Discussion Group has finally been
put to rest, but is being replaced by a new Discussion area called the EverythingComputers
Discussion Board that should prove to be much more robust.
Unfortunately the Front Page discussion software
I used to run Talkback could not handle the volume of traffic that it generated, causing
all kinds of strange problems. Most recently, all posts were being combined with older
messages as well. I investigated fixing the problem on several occasions but found that
there was no real solution.
Because of this change, any messages that were
posted to Talkback have been deleted. I apologize to those of you who posted messages that
were never responded to, but the data simply was not salvagable. I encourage you to try
the new Discussion Board and tell me what you think.
Along with these rearrangements, I've also added
a redirection page that comes up whenever you attempt to go to
an old Talkback page, or any other page that doesn't exist.
Finally, I've also fixed the Java-based Chat Page, which makes it much easier to join in the
weekly chat that happens during the "O'Donnell on Computers" radio show.
February 5, 1999
I've updated the site to refer to my upcoming
book Personal Computer Secrets, as well as added a page to
celebrate my 1,000,000th page view.
January 29, 1999
I made some minor but important corrections to
the Starting Over: Repartitioning, Reformatting and Reinstalling
article in the Troubleshooting Guide.
January 1, 1999
I've updated the site for the new year, adding
1998 archive pages for RealAudio, Links and News, Columns and What's
New. I've also made some additions to the Mac
Software Troubleshooting Tips article in the Troubleshooting
Guide.
