What's New Changes from 1998

December 12, 1998

I've made a few additions and updates to the Troubleshooting Resources page.

October 10, 1998

In honor of the one year anniversary of Everything Computers, I've made numerous additions and refinements to the site (basically all the things people have asked for and that I've been meaning to do for a while!). Specifically, I've added a new article to the Troubleshooting Guide entitled "Starting Over: Repartitioning, Reformatting, and Reinstalling" which covers exactly what to do in the event you want a fresh start with your PC. I've also re-organized the Troubleshooting Guide a bit and added printer-friendly versions of all the articles you'll find there. There's also a new Magazine Articles page that has links to articles available on the Internet that I've written for publications other than InfoWorld. Finally, I've also added a Site Map that gives you a quick overview of everything that's available here on Everything Computers.

September 26, 1998

At long last, I've completed the promised list of articles in the Troubleshooting Guide with the addition of the "PC Startup Troubleshooting Tips" article.

September 11, 1998

I've made several additions/changes to the Troubleshooting Guide, including a new article on "Mac Software Troubleshooting Tips," and revised versions of the "Mac Hardware Troubleshooting Tips," "PC Hardware Troubleshooting Tips" and "PC Software Troubleshooting Tips" articles. I've also added some new links to the Troubleshooting Resources page.

August 8, 1998

To help encourage more people to try the live chat during the "O'Donnell on Computers" weekly radio show, I've added a new Java-based Chat Page that makes it incredibly easy to join in. As long as you have a Java-capable browser, all you have to do is type in a password and hit Enter. Try it out and let me know how it works.

July 4, 1998

Once again I've made several additions to the "O'Donnell on Computers" Listeners Page as well as a few more links to the Troubleshooting Resources Page, including some new networking and Y2K links.

June 26, 1998

There are several interesting new additions to the Troubleshooting Resources Page, as well as lots of new links on the "O'Donnell on Computers" Listeners Page.

June 12, 1998

Several new additions have been made to the "O'Donnell on Computers" Listeners Page as well as the Users Group Page.

June 5, 1998

I've added a few new additions to the Microsoft Knowledge Base section of my Troubleshooting Resources Page and added information about the upcoming ABC Tech World event I'll be participating in on my Live Appearance page.

May 29, 1998

I've added a link to Chat Transcripts from the "O'Donnell on Computers" Live Chat page. Note that this link pops up a new window that lists chat archives that you can download by simply clicking on them. I've also added a link on my "Creating a 'Real' Windows 95 Boot Disk" article page that lets you view my recent ZDTV appearance to talk about that page.

May 22, 1998

I made several more additions and changes to the Troubleshooting Resources page, updated the "PC Hardware Troubleshooting," "PC Software Troubleshooting" and "Creating a 'Real' Windows 95 Boot Disk" articles to reflect changes as a result of Windows 98, and did lots of little edits and tweaks in various places, including fixing some horizontal scrolling problems.

May 15, 1998

I've added several additions to the Troubleshooting Resources page, including some Microsoft Year 2000-related links.

May 9, 1998

I've tweaked the RealAudio and Live Chat pages to provide a bit more information and basic directions on how to take advantage of each of them. I've also added the 1996 Plugged In Column Archive and the thirty or so individual columns from '96.

May 1, 1998

I'm pleased to announce that "O'Donnell on Computers" can now be heard live on the Web via RealAudio every Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. I've updated the RealAudio page to reflect that. In addition, there will be a live chat that accompanies the show every week. The new Chat page includes links to IRC client software as well as instructions on how to participate. I encourage you to join in what promises to be a fun, lively conversation.

April 20, 1998

I've added two more archived shows in RealAudio format--April 4 and April 18. From now on, I'll just be adding the current week's show. I've also added links and information for the last two "Meeting the Challenge" shows for this season. Watch for re-reruns of some of these shows this summer. Finally, I've added a page with information about the upcoming KSFO Common Sense Convention where I'll be making a live appearance on May 1.

April 18, 1998

At long last, I've added RealAudio support for the "O'Donnell on Computers" radio show. You can listen to archives of a few previous shows either by visiting the RealAudio page or by going to The Week's Links pages for the weeks that have been archived (currently it's just April 11 and March 28, but I plan to have more soon).

I'm still working on a live RealAudio feed, but in the mean time, if you've ever missed part of a show or live in an area of the country (or the world) where you can't hear the show at all, you now have your chance. Each archive is the complete show, minus only the network and local news segments at the beginning of each hour (which explains why they're about 2:38 instead of three hours long).

April 11, 1998

I've added the 1997 Archive of my "Plugged In" columns (including the 50 or so individual columns) and made some additions to the Troubleshooting Resources page.

March 21, 1998

I've added several news links to useful Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on the Troubleshooting Resources page, updated the "Meeting the Challenge" Links page and a made a few other tweaks in various places.

March 7, 1998

I'm pleased to announce that the text of the weekly "Plugged In" column that I write for InfoWorld Electric is now available on the site. I've got a link to This Week's Column as well as a partial archive of Previous Columns (additional old columns will be added in the next week or two). The column will be updated early every Saturday morning, but carries a Monday date--just in case you were getting confused.... You'll find links to the weekly column on the Magazines page and, of course, now there's lots more content through which you can Search.

I've made several additions to the Troubleshooting Resources page, including a section that links straight to useful articles I've found in Microsoft's enormous Knowledge Base, as well as a great scanning site. I've also updated the "Meeting the Challenge" Links page.

February 28, 1998

I've made some additions to the "PC Software Troubleshooting Tips" article, as well as a few tweaks to the "Creating a 'Real' Windows 95 Boot Disk" article. I've also added a new troubleshooting site link specifically for PC gamers to the Troubleshooting Resources page.

February 21, 1998

Two new articles have been added to the Troubleshooting Guide. The first one, called "Creating a 'Real' Windows 95 Boot Disk," explains how to create a bootable floppy disk that includes a CD-ROM driver. The second, called "Mac Hardware Troubleshooting Tips," covers general Macintosh advice, with a detailed focus on SCSI problems.

February 7, 1998

I've added several new sites to the Troubleshooting Resources page, both for PCs and Macs. I've also done some housecleaning, including fixing some broken links and reorganizing my files and folders. One unfortunate result of this is if you had a bookmark to a specific week's links or news page, that URL will no longer work. The This Week's Links, This Week's News and Previous Weeks' Links and News pages have not changed, though, so any bookmarks to those pages will still work.

January 30, 1998

I've added a new Users Group Page that includes information about several different users groups throughout the Northern California area, as well as a link to a users group locator that can help you find the group nearest to where you live.

January 24, 1998

I added lots of great new links to the "O'Donnell on Computers" Listener's Page. I'm also planning to add a User's Group page, so if you run or participate in a User's Group that has a web site, please send me the relevant details.

January 10, 1998

The Television section of the site has been updated, including a more complete list of show topics, segments and links for the Meeting the Challenge program. I've also created 1997 archive pages for the Previous Weeks' Links and News, as well as this What's New page.
